Certificate of Personal Effectiveness

CoPE can be studied at 2 levels. Level 1 is equivalent to a Grade E at GCSE, Level 2 is equivalent to Grade B at GCSE. The course takes 2 years to complete.

Students choose a number of ‘challenges’ from the 12 modules of the course. The 12 modules are:

Communication
Sport & Leisure
The Environment
Health & Fitness
Science & Technology
Beliefs and Values
Citizenship & Community
Independent Living
Vocational Preparation
Expressive Arts
International Links
Work Related Enterprise

Students develop six skills during the course. The development of these skills help students to achieve in your other subjects as well as preparing them for work or college.These skills are:

  • Communication through discussion
  • Improving your own learning
  • Working with others
  • Problem solving
  • Carrying out a piece of research
  • Planning and giving an oral presentation

Examples of the challenges are:

1. Identify the possible causes of one of the following and present your 'findings':

  • Poverty
  • Third World Debt
  • The Arms Trade
  • Drug Abuse
  • Racism
  • Agreed Topic of Your Choice

2. Take an organisational role in one of the following:

  • Running a Sporting Competition, Join a Five-a-Side Football Team
  • Coaching/Umpiring
  • A Youth or Community Centre Activity

3. Complete a Fird Aid qualification and become a registered first aider.

Students are able to select which modules they complete. The work that students complete is practical. Whist completing the course students gain other qualifications, for example getting a first aid certificate. Students will be supported and advised by their Teacher.

1 Communication & Discussion

Give an illustrated talk about a topic of interest to a group of people and answer any questions OP

Show that you can obtain information on a topic you are interested in, from at least 2 different sources R

  • Internet
  • Listening to the radio/ tv
  • Newspaper
  • Interview

As part of a group complete one of the following WO

a. Entertain a number of people to tea or coffee
b. Welcome visitors and show them around your establishment

Find out how to use a piece of equipment. LP

Make notes and images to help you demonstrate/ present this new skill to others.

Plan 2 journeys to the IMAX in town. Use the tube and the bus. Put all relevant maps into your work. LP

Communication & Discussion

Write and illustrated short story for a younger aged group and arrange to read your story to a group of children. R, OP

Present information from a magazine or newspaper articles on a current issue. Use graphs and tables to support your presentation. R

3 Sport & Leisure

Show improvements in an outdoor or indoor sport over an agreed period of time. LP

Learn how to play draughts. PS

Teach several other people how to play.

Have a championship amongst your group.

4 Independent Living

Plan and prepare a balanced 2 course meal or a packed lunch for a

  • elderly person
  • teenager
  • someone on a diet
  • a family with 2 children under 5 years old LP

Select 3 items of clothing made of different materials and show how they should be washed. PS

Using newspaper and other sources of information find out how much it will cost to

a. Rent
b. Buy a flat or house

Consider the advantages and the disadvantages of each option and how you could cut costs with each. PS

Imagine you are living on your own.

What bills might you have to pay and what methods are there for paying them?

If you were on a low income or unemployed what help might you be able? LP

You are moving to an unfurnished flat. You have only £1000 to buy everything you need. What would you need, how would you get it and how much would it cost? PS

5 Independent Living

Invite someone to talk toy you and/or your group about the problems of debt. Produce an information sheet advising about the problems and solutions. PS

Consider the nutritional needs of a teenager. R

6 The Environment

As a group visit a recycling centre or energy saving centre.

Organise a collection of newspapers, bottles, cans or other recyclable items, and identify some other things your establishment could do to save energy. WO,LP

Investigate occupations that are concerned with the environment and present your findings. R, OP

7 Vocational Preparation

Talk to a connections advisor or your tutor and start to make plans for the next stage of your career or education. You may need to find out about qualifications, further employment opportunities.

Complete an Action plan showing what you need to do next in order to be successful. LP

Make a list of your skills, qualities and work experience. Update your personal records. This might involve building your CV or adding to a Progress File or Record of Achievement. LP

Investigate the skills and qualities needed for people who work in one of the following occupations R

  • Administration
  • Customers services
  • Care
  • Hairdressing
  • Industrial cleaner
  • Painter and decorator
  • Motor vehicle
  • Retail
  • Horticulture
  • Other

From your experience of the work place make a poster or leaflet that clearly explains hazards and dangers of working in that particular place. PS

Using actual job adverts from the jobcentre, gather a range of information that shows how you would apply for three jobs that interest you. LP

Complete an application for one of these jobs

OR

Design a job advert and job description or person specification for the job you did on your work placement.

8 & 9 Vocational Preparation

Plan and complete a vocational training placement.
I credit= 10 hours, 2 credits= 20hours LP

Provide evidence that you have

  • Attended regularly sand been on time
  • Followed the organisation’s guidelines if you were not there for any reason
  • Worn the right clothing and had the right equipment to do the job effectively
  • Completed work activities well to deadlines’ ( if any were set)
  • Always worked safely and followed advice
  • Coped with any difficulties or problems that may have arisen
  • Identified which skills you have improved while you have been on your work experience placement
  • Used your experience to help you with your career choices.
10 Health & Fitness

Training course for a recognised First aid qualification LP

11 International Links

Complete challenge one from module 1- Communication, Section A using a foreign language of your choice. OP

OR

Establish a link with someone from another country and swap information on topics of personal and social interest. LP

Research an international issue currently in the news. Take part in a discussion about it. R

Choose one of the following activities R

  • Produce an illustrated study of a foreign city
  • Collect and display stamps/ labels from 4 more countries
  • Compare weather in December and June of three holiday
  • destinations with that at home.
  • Plan a holiday in a foreign resort
  • Learn a song from another country

With others plan and host an international breakfast, lunch or tea based on typical meals from another country.

  • WO
  • Find out about ‘world music’

    Give a talk to others about this category of music, playing examples for your audience to hear. OP
