KS3 Year 7
Year 8
Year 9
Students have the opportunity to Design and Make objects in the two major facets of the subject:  Resistant Materials and Compliant Materials. Graphics is taught within these two facets. The subject is taught on a rotation, students moving through the subject disciplines. Resistant Materials involves the use of wood, electronics, metal and plastics.  Students design, make and test a biscuit cutter using aspects of CAD/CAM and make an automata which uses wood and mechanisms. Throughout the Key Stage the students gain knowledge and skills by making a sensor using electronics, a small storage item which uses metal and plastics and an automata which uses wood and mechanisms.

Compliant materials involve the use of fabrics and food.  Throughout the Key Stage students will make a card / wallet holder, a book holder and a stretchy hat for a named user.  In food, the emphasis is on teaching the students life skills in cooking, healthy eating and nutrition.  Students work through a variety of small Design & Make activities on incorporating Fruit & Vegetables in the diet, the making of a new Tear’n’Share flavoured bread, substitute breakfast foods that can be eaten on the move.  In year 9 they analyse their own eating patterns then study how popular foods that they enjoy eating can be adapted to suit the requirements of a healthy diet.
KS4 Year 10
Year 11
Students have the opportunity to opt to take a GCSE in Food Technology, Resistant Materials, Textiles and Graphics (Product Design). During this time they spend two years studying one material in greater detail.  The subject specific materials all involve the teaching of knowledge and skills and incorporate Design and Make activities. Students can also opt to take a BTec in Construction.  This is taught off site in a partnership with Conel.
KS5 Year 12
Year 13
Product design is offered at A’ level.  Students study all the material areas of resistant materials in even more depth and creative flair.  They then chose to specialise in a particular material for the coursework element of the subject.
To help advance the skills and knowledge of students a Coursework Club operates after school every Wednesday.

A Cookery Club also runs after school during the Spring and Summer Terms.
