Year 9

Within Key Stage 3 students have the opportunity to design and make objects in the two major facets of this subject.

Resistant Materials:
Wood, Metal, Plastic and Electronics
Compliant Materials:
Fibres and Fabrics, and Food.

Graphic and ICT skills are integrated within the teaching of all materials.  ICT skills include aspects of computer aided design and manufacture.

In Year 7 pupils are introduced to the subject by taking a generic design and make task which involves the production of a phototype picture frame.  Various design and make skills are taught and the end achievements  of students are used to form a benchmark for their potential achievements at Key Stage 3.

They then progress to gaining knowledge on the safe use of basic equipment and electrical tools by working through a variety of focused practical tasks.  They are then able to use tools and equipment to follow longer Design and Make Assignments.

Design and Make Assigments within the Key Stage include:

CAD/CAM Plastics Project

Textiles product which involves design and make of a Wallet/Card Holder which includes Computer Aided Manufacture.

Food based projects which included mini design and make tasks on the Eat Well Plate, design and make foods to add variety to packed lunches and a tear 'n' share flavoured bread.

KS4 Year 10
Year 11

Students have the opportunity to opt to take a GCSE in Food Technology, Resistant Materials, Textiles and Graphics (Product Design). During this time they spend two years studying one material in greater detail.  The subject specific materials all involve the teaching of knowledge and skills and incorporate Design and Make activities. Students can also opt to take a BTec in Construction.  This is taught off site in a partnership with Conel.

KS5 Year 12
Year 13
Product design is offered at A’ level.  Students study all the material areas of resistant materials in even more depth and creative flair.  They then chose to specialise in a particular material for the coursework element of the subject.
To help advance the skills and knowledge of students a Coursework Club operates after school every Wednesday.

A Cookery Club also runs after school during the Spring and Summer Terms.
