News from the Maths Department

The Maths Department is currently offering in addition to GCSE in Maths:

  • Level 3 qualification (Additional Maths).
  • New Level 2 qualification GCSE in STATISTICS.
  • AS Maths and A2 Maths.

Now, for the parents of Year 10 you should inform them of the following:

All Year 10 students will be studying Maths in  Year 11 to gain either one or more of the following qualifications:

  • GCSE in Maths by the time they finish Year 11.
  • Level 3 Qualification (Additional Maths) offered to the fast track1 Year 10/11 cohort achieving GCSE grades B-A*.
  • GCSE in STATISTICS offered to the fast track2 Year 10/11 cohort achieving a GCSE grade of at least a C.
  • AS Maths offered at the end of Year 11 to all students that achieve GCSE grade of at least a B.

The department is accommodated in a suite of 7 classrooms with 4 interactive whiteboards.

We run Saturday revision classes for GCSE pupils and are here to help pupils through extra classes after school as required.

Maths trips included a visit to Gresham University for Year 10/11 pupils who attended a lecture on the maths behind ‘gambling, game shows and horse betting’. This year we have a similar lecture planned about maths and sports.
Year 9 attended the British Museum where they took part in an exciting maths trial

Gifted and Talented students from Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in the Maths Olympics Week where they competed against other students across the world. Gifted and Talented pupils also took part in the Maths Challenge Competition competing against the brains of London at Wembley High School.

We produce a monthly Maths Magazine which includes games, puzzles and up to date information on what’s happening in maths in the school. We also run a weekly maths club where pupils enjoy maths games, including planning and running sessions in linked primary schools using ICT. The pupils in the club also organised a paper airplane competition.

The department has Links to the Gambia where Mr Emmott visited some linked schools and took part in a maths project with the pupils over there.  We are also involved in some fund raising to help build a new school library for the school and raised almost £1000 towards the cause.
